The Transition From Fitness to Yoga and Why I Stayed with Yoga

After 10 yrs of no yoga I started to practice again. Deciding yoga was the missing ingredient to the hard-core cardio and weight training I was into. Unfortunately 10yrs of workouts had tightened up my muscles and joints and all of the yoga poses that came so easily 10 yrs ago now seemed out of reach. Determined to get back to where I was, though nagged by the thought “you get stiff and then you get old’, I persisted.

Were the ‘work outs’ the culprit in losing flexibility? I was not willing to admit that it was because I had aged that I had lost flexibility!   Was it the fact that I didn’t stretch enough, after workouts? Who has the time to stretch?! I was a busy trainer running all over town taking care of clients. Cardio, weight training, stretching…it all took too much time! As I incorporated more yoga and less workout, I enjoyed it so much I enrolled in a 200hr yoga certification to compliment the fitness I was teaching.

It took 3 full yrs of all yoga and no working out, but I finally won back that beautiful natural flexibility! Did I want to go back to working out?

Not in the least, all that flexibillity felt too good. Plus, no more aches and pains from knotted, sore and aching muscles while pushing myself with workouts.

Was it worth the 3 yr investment? Well first of all my body looked and felt so much better. In yoga because you are constantly holding your own body weight in an endless array of movements from handstands, to shoulder stands, to one legged balances with twists and plank variations, my body remained very strong, sculpted and supple. I also learned to breath properly, stand quietly surrendering deeper into poses, practicing awareness of how each body part was aligned and activated. From a thoughtful intention and dynamic heart felt center I learned to ground myself by pressing into the floor which freed me to expand energy outward and upward to lengthen so as to create and feel the lines of energy while moving gracefully from one pose to the next. I discovered a form of moving meditation in union of body, mind and breath which is the definition of yoga.

 I also slimmed down, not from ‘dieting’ or effort but rather, a sense of fulfillment. Not as ravenously hungry as I was when I was “exercising” food simply, though I still enjoyed it, was fuel to feed my somewhat thankfully diminished hunger. It was no longer as tantalizing and appealing perhaps because I was calmer, and felt more at peace. I made healthier choices too, desiring foods and living situations that were colorful and simple. Yoga gave me the gift of self acceptance and self compassion, life’s ups and downs became easier and less jarring. I stopped feeling like I had to be better, do more, get leaner and I relaxed into my own skin more.

When I finished my full 500hr certification. Teaching became a wonderful outlet for me, a different form of meditation to calm and sooth.

Do I still have other forms of exercise? Sure! I love walking, for long distances too. Cycling also feels wonderful. Sometimes I have to run and I can, gracefully.   Gardening, landscaping our place in the country, chopping wood, weeding, helping my husband build beautiful rock walls, dancing, but the yoga is a part of my life that I practice everyday on and off the mat.

Can anyone recommend a cheap yoga place in NYC?

I have never done yoga before but am looking to get into it and I’m on a tight budget.

But yoga has its own features. You could abide by some rules when you practice yoga. At first, you should choose the best time to go yoga. Generally speaking, people go yoga in the morning, afternoon and at noon. Actually, you could practice it all the day if only your stomach is empty. In other words, you shouldn’t practice it within three hours after meals. But yogi believes that four to six o’clock in the morning is the best time.

And then, place plays an important role. You’d better to practice it in a clean and comfortable room with sufficient space for stretching yourself. Green plants, flowers and soft music can help you to relax nerves. An open area without gale, pollution and strong sunlight is also a great choice to practice yoga.

Third, some props are necessarily. Yoga mat has a cushioning action and help you to keep balance. For beginners, yoga rope, yoga strap, yoga socks, and yoga block are other necessities to practice some difficult postures. By the way, you could purchase a yoga mat on online stores because they usually sell yoga mat with other props. It is easy and convenient for you to prepare for the learning.

Fourth, the cloth should be loose and soft. The cotton material is the best choice. When you practice it, you should take off shoes, socks (except for in winter), watch, glass, belt and other accouterments.

Fifth, it isn’t a good habit to practice yoga twenty minutes before and after taking a shower. It could hurt your health and consume your energy if you take a shower before practice it. The blood circulation could speed up after take a shower. In this way, it could increase your blood pressure, and add the burden on heart. The best way is taking a cold shower after practice it.

Yogic theory and practice increases self-knowledge which is a spiritual sort pertaining to grasp something about the nature. You could get lost in a rush of activities and push of desires after you are at peace, as a being and at rest state.

Where can I find quality yoga clothes that I can afford?

I’m going to begin yoga classes in a few weeks, and I have no idea where I could find yoga clothes. I’ve been to a couple of sites, like athleta.com and lululemon, but I can’t afford to spend $85 on a pair of yoga pants. Is there anywhere that sells yoga clothes that I can afford (no more than $40 or so for a pair of pants)???

I’m not too sure, buuuut… Walmart, Ross, and thrift stores are some what alright.

Simple Meditation Techniques : Chakra Meditation

One of the best decisions I have ever made was to use my love of writing as the perfect medium to not only build my business on, but to use as the perfect excuse to feed my curious, naturally inquisitive nature as well. I have a ferocious hunger for understanding anything that is put in front of me that even slightly peaks my interest. I am so passionate about acquiring as much information as I can attain, sufficient to say, Science -Particularly the field of Physics (there are 16 separate disciplines by the way!) gets my complete and full attention – every time – without any exception. That being said, investigating Bill Harris’s story and researching his back ground was one of my real “Brain Feeds” during the course of my writing about the players in the movie The Secret.

Let me tell you -this guy is INCREDIBLE! He has mastered the art of merging scientific measure, brain function and meditation into one amazing medium that is truly without question -sheer genius! i.e. A study was done on individuals that were both practitioners of meditation and those that were not. These individuals where then connected by electrodes placed on their scalp to a device called a Mind Mirror which is a type of EEG machine that was essentially used to measure alpha, delta, beta, and theta waves that showed what was happening in the interior hemisphere of the brain while the subjects were subjected to a series of tests that exposed them to different exercise elements and at various levels of consciousness.

The results were astonishing! The difference between the two groups -were so far off as night form day or black from white, thus showing the meditators in a much more “balanced” state in relation to the areas of both the left and right sides of the brain “sharing” information on a nearly equal level equating to a type of brain synchronization if you will. Meanwhile the brain wave activity in the non-mediators showed a clear and dominant reign in the left side of the participants’ brains, indicating that they were attempting to “compensate” using the minds logic to take in the material it was exposed to.

So in plain English what does that mean to both you and I? It means that the type of meditation that Bill Harris has developed and introduced to his students becomes a kind of balancing device that gives a greater level of harmony to the brain – in other words the mind doesn’t have to work so hard to navigate its way around a suggestion or new idea. It instead works in union with both sides of the brain and takes its suggested lead from the information it is being fed via audiotapes they listen to in a meditative-like state utilizing the science of what is called Audio Holosync Technology. This there by no longer forces the meditator to consciously work around old, archaic and negative or fearful beliefs -clearing the way to a healthier state of mind quicker and with much greater end results! Apparently it only takes a few short minutes a day -making it a feasible option for even the busiest of people. Just Google Bill Harris and you can find out more for yourself.

If you have seen The Secret you will find Bill described as a Teacher -if his products do what he claims they can, perhaps he could he considered a Mind Healer as well.

Meditation Art
I have been in Judo for about a year now. Is it the right martial art for me?

I am a large guy. Built like a truck. I began with Judo as a way to get myself in shape mentally as well as physically while dealing with immense stressors. A close friend of my father is a Hachidan, so it made it a simple choice to join him in his workouts and meditation. Anyway, while I enjoy it very much, I am not sure if it’s what’s best for me. I was a heavyweight wrestler and football player in high school. I have always been very strong. Since judo is often about using momentum of the opponent to your advantage, I don’t often have the opportunity to use my strength to my advantage. Should I switch to another art? Should I crosstrain in another art? Thanks for your input.

Judo is an excellent foundational art. Many famous westener martial artists started out with judo, eg Chuck Norris (while in the army) and Australia’s Richard Norton.
If you want to take advantage of your strength why not consider crosstraining in a strength based striking martial art? Karate, boxing and kickboxing are all styles that take advantage of ones strength. Afterall, if you can take out an attacker with a single strong punch to the jaw, then there will be no need for throwing and grappling.
Finally, if you enjoy your Judo training don’t give it up because it teaches excellent practical skills, however if you are considering training in another style, crosstrain in one of the martial art’s i mentioned for a while before you decide if you want to give up on Judo altogether.
